When brainstorming ideas to bring my piece to life, I knew I wanted to find a way to incorporate my family into it. As a first generation student, there are things my parents can't help me with in terms of academics. Yet the support they've provided me with is far greater than academic support in my perspective. They've supported me through every milestone in my life whether it's big or small; always there to celebrate with me, giving me life advice, or simply to hang out with me.
All these traits are shown in my piece of art which I named “Yesterday & Tomorrow”. The piece represents this support I've received in the past and will continue receiving as time goes on. Pictured in my painting I created 5 bubbles with my family inside of them. Out of the five bubbles, 4 have 2 of my family members and then me in the middle. Starting from the bottom left are my godparents then moving up are my parents. Right next to them are family members who have passed. Here we have my grandparents from my dads side of the family and my grandpa & uncle from my moms side. Top right are my two older brothers and lastly on the bottom right my aunt and grandma and my dog.
This placement of myself in the middle is meant to represent how I'm always surrounded by my family and their support. Then at the bottom I have myself with my cap and gown. I specifically chose to recreate my senior year high school portrait because it represents my journey of where I am now as a highschool graduate, continuing to achieve higher education. “Yesterday & Tomorrow ” also holds meaning to the color pallette I chose to use to create my art. The colors on the cap and gown were the ones I wore in the past for my high school graduation and the future colors I'll be wearing once again when I finish my bachelor's degree and graduate. The gold outline and stars hold meaning to the saying “reach for the stars” because there's no limit to what can be achieved if you set your mind to it and have the support of your family there to help you as you make your dreams come, reaching for those stars
