Studying In The Kitchen

My painting represents the appreciation I have for my family's efforts to give me an opportunity for a better life. I grew up in a struggling household but with both my mother and father that had unconditional love for me and my siblings. My parents tell me stories of when they went to school in Mexico and how they would go to school on an empty stomach and with worn out shoes. So, in contrast, they gave us everything they didn’t have when they were growing up. This meant me and my siblings always had what we needed for school and that we always had enough to eat. My mom was always in the kitchen making sure we had healthy meals in order for us to perform our best at school and my dad worked hard to buy us everything we needed.
In my painting my mother is seen in the background cooking by the stove, making a meal for our family. In the foreground I depict myself doing my homework and I have a hot meal waiting for me when I am ready. I have all the supplies I need to do my homework including my books and a computer that my father bought for me. The privilege I have of getting a good education is thanks to my family. I couldn’t have gotten into the top public universities in the nation if it weren’t for their support. They gave me everything I needed in order for me to be focused only on school.
So, seeing my parents efforts, I dedicated myself to my school work to be the first in my family to get into university. My hard work was amazingly rewarding, I got into 7 out of the 8 universities I applied for my senior year. I know I couldn't have gotten to where I am without the support my parents gave me throughout my life. Even now they support all my decisions and I know that I will never have to worry about not having them by my side. They may not be the perfect parents but they did what they thought was right to give me a better life and give me the chance for a better future and for that I will always be immensely grateful
